About M.C. Beaton

M.C. Beaton was the pen name of Marion Chesney Gibbons (1936–2019), a prolific Scottish-born, English-raised author who wrote over 250 books across multiple genres and pen names. She is best known for two cozy mystery series: the Agatha Raisin Mysteries and the Hamish Macbeth Mysteries.

Before becoming a novelist, Beaton worked as a journalist, theater critic, and bookseller. Her sharp observational skills and dry wit translated directly into her fiction. Agatha Raisin — abrasive, competitive, and endearingly human — is widely considered one of the most memorable characters in cozy mystery fiction. The contrast between Agatha's London-bred brashness and the gentle Cotswold village of Carsely is the engine that drives the series.

The Hamish Macbeth series, set in the Scottish Highlands, features a lazily brilliant police constable who actively avoids promotion so he can stay in his beloved village of Lochdubh. Both series have been adapted for television. Beaton's influence on the cozy genre is immense — she demonstrated that a cozy protagonist did not have to be sweet or likable, just compelling. After her death, the Agatha Raisin series has been continued by Rod Green based on her notes and outlines.
