New to Cozy Mysteries? Start Here

Welcome! If you have landed on this page, you are probably curious about cozy mysteries but not entirely sure what they are or where to begin. This page will give you the quick version — what defines the genre, why people love it, and how to find your first book.

What Makes a Mystery "Cozy"?

A cozy mystery is a subgenre of crime fiction defined by what it leaves out as much as what it includes. The key characteristics are:

An amateur sleuth. The protagonist is not a police officer or private investigator. She (it is usually a she) is a baker, a librarian, a florist, a knitter, or some other everyday person who gets drawn into investigating a crime, usually because it affects someone she knows or her community.

No graphic content. Murders happen in cozies — that is the mystery part. But the violence occurs off-page. You will not read detailed crime scenes, graphic descriptions of injuries, explicit sexual content, or heavy profanity. These books are clean reads.

A small-town or close-knit community setting. Cozies are almost always set in small towns, villages, or tight-knit communities where everyone knows everyone. This creates a natural suspect pool and makes the social dynamics central to the story.

A warm, often humorous tone. Despite dealing with murder, cozies are fundamentally comforting. The tone is warm and often funny. The world of the cozy mystery is one where justice prevails, communities hold together, and life goes on pleasantly after the crime is solved.

Recurring characters and settings. Most cozies are part of ongoing series. You return to the same town, the same cast of characters, and the same setting (bakery, bookshop, tea room) with each new book. This creates a sense of familiarity and comfort that is central to the genre's appeal.
